Day 12 – Silver lining

I live beyond the finish line,
existing in the freedom of eternity.

Dark clouds might shroud the sun,
but there, I see the silver lining,

A gleam behind the shadow.
Could we claim it? That faith that

Life is good.

Days 10 and 11

Day 10

Spiral into oblivion,
we’re all just echos in the void.
What matters to the mountains
is when those who shout
cause rocks to tremble and
avalanches to tumble.
Have you seen the window?
Do you see your reflection or
the other side?
Beware the breaking;
greener grass is meant to stay
perfect from afar is safer
where one cannot discern a blemish.

Day 11

Sleep

Droop and nod, drift and bob,

the exhaustion is strong in this one.

Can’t carry a conversation in a bucket.

The eyes stick and drag,

teh fingers miss and lag.

Her thoughts are like molasses,

her voice a raspy snore………………

It’s been a long day. I missed posting a poem yesterday, so you get two abstract, written-while-half-asleep poems for the price of one. Enjoy the nonsense.

Day 9 – Moonrise

Thousands of miles a minute,
and yet indiscernible to the eye
except in relation to the tilt
of our heads close together.
Sharing memories, making new.
A dog barks, children laugh,
the troubadour plays his song.

Close to sleeping time,
but first we chill,
joke and chuckle.
Go where we will,
enjoy the proximity.
Who are they?
Yet who are we?

Thousands of miles a minute,
yet indiscernible to time,
except in relation to the tilt
of our lives close together.
Making memories, sharing new.
Children bark, a dog laughs,
and the troubadour plays his song.

Day 8 – Haiku

I keep waiting for inspiration
to strike like lightning,
ignite a fire in my fingers ,
dazzle us all with poetic brilliance…
But the saying “Practice makes perfect,”
is more true than some might admit.
And poetry is nothing if not
the soul’s search for perfection.
But the harder I try,
the further inspiration flies
from my fingertips,
my hands freeze mid-sentence.

Just the other day,
in fact, I tried a haiku,
and this is as far

Day 7 – Friday!

Well, stick a fork in me

and call me a pile of mush.

How thankful I am,

as little more than a puddle

of exhaustion on the floor,

that today is Friday at last!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s been a rough week. The internet went out with that storm, so I haven’t been able to post in a few days. But today after work, even though I was exhausted, I hooked up the new router and got it working. Personally, I’m impressed with myself, given I was half-asleep and sick as a dog. But then I also had help. Thanks Mom! ❤
Days 5 and 6
Day 5 — The Storm
There is fear in the flood, and though we perceive
strobe and drum roll, shelter relieves.
Remember with fondness, days in the sun.
They do come again, when Summer’s begun.
Some small existences cannot understand,
this is not all, so hold my hand.
Be at peace, little one, every storm does pass,
this, and the next, until you see at last,
Vaulting blue skies, and white sky cotton.
Butterflies flutter by, until you’ve quite forgotten
the darkness of winter, the thrill of a storm,
and the loving teachers, who kept you safe and warm.
Day 6 — After the Storm
Distant wispy clouds scud patiently,
full of bluster and fluff.
Their linings are not always silver,
but sometimes gold, or simple blue.
The dark rolls in, a threat of yesterday’s repeat —
itself an exercise in glory, in courage,
in faith.
Today, though, is more sun than shadow,
more vapor veil than pelting hail.
Jape and laugh, point and shout.
There goes an airplane! All is right again.
Day 4 – Unfocused,
let the layers fall away,
through the world goes our gaze,
penetrating film and cell alike,
and to the onion say we, dry
your eyes lest candles ignite,
sudden through deep midnight.
Impossible diamonds cascade
and, though we grasp, dreams fade.
Never look at your phone in the middle of the night. Never. I had a dream, and the minute that screen blinded me, I forgot it. 😦
Rain – Day 3
Chill, persistent rivers pour from the sky,
fill small valleys up into lakes.
Outside it’s going swimmingly,
inside not so much.
Shining eyes watch, fascinated.
Our sky is grey today.
Rain, rain, go away,
we just want the children to play.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It rained a lot today, and the children I teach at the daycare couldn’t go outside to play. It was chaos. An uninspired poem, but I’m determined to write something every day this month, no matter how horrible it is. So there xD

Un-blinking – Day 2

Today, instead of blinking,
I closed my eyes, and then briefly opened them.
Snapshots of this new-bloomed world
captured, they remain.

Quick beauty in the drifting dogwood.
Daffodil flashing to my right.
The bright above of a high blue sky,
a frantic flutter of young yellow wings.

Though, isn’t that just Spring?
A burst of sudden life and color,
the beauty of joy in youth,
the first steps in a dance of creation…

This poem feels unfinished because it is, and because that’s the point. Happy Spring!

April NaPoWriMo Day 1

Shells would stay there, quietly,
if given the chance to last.
But ground must be gained
for progress’ sake,
and so sand they become, willingly.
Mixed and pigmented,
bottled and spread,
to many corners, to nooks,
sometimes even to shells.
They would take satisfaction to see
their own newfangled beauty,
if but eyes they had without.

But those with eyes only ever look up,
wishing for impossible wings.
If we’d glanced to tread, twice instead,
perhaps we’d have seen better things.
To appreciate a sacrifice, humbly,
one might close our gaze.
To know the hearts,
play smaller parts,
and give of one self, freely.

Happy first day of National Poetry writing month! I’m glad that I have the bandwidth to attempt it this year. Last year I was overwhelmed with a new job and it simply didn’t happen. So, starting off with a moderately horrible poem inspired by painting pottery today. I’m sure it’ll get better later in the month; I’m quite out of practice and rhyming is not my friend right now. But hey that’s the point, right? 🙂
